Tamiya - In September 1937 the USS Yorktown was constructed as the first ship of her namesake-class. She was the flagship of Task Force 17 under the command of Rear Admiral Frank J. Fletcher as the Pacific War broke out, and executed a variety of operations throughout the Pacific. She helped curb the advance of the Japanese Navy on New Guinea during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, despite suffering severe damage. The Yorktown and her sister ships USS Enterprise and USS Hornet subsequently defeated the Japanese Mobile Fleet at the Battle of Midway, but the Yorktown itself received substantial damage from torpedo and bomb hits from the Japanese carrier Hiryu's aircraft. She was eventually sunk by Japanese submarine I-168 torpedoes.
