Adult Collectible ages 14+ During World War II, the revered Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless served as the U.S. Navy's principal carrier based scout bomber aircraft from 1940 until 1944, as it offered impressive flying and range attributes along with exceptional weaponry. Deployed on countless missions during the war, it is best recognized for its use in the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Led by squadron commander Richard Halsey Best, four squadrons of SBD-3 Dauntless aircraft, sinking two Japanese fleet aircraft carriers Akagi and Hiryu and badly damaged two other Kaga and Soryu.
