Carrera or Scalextric – What’s in a scale?
We carry slot car sets from two different companies. From Carrera we offer 1:43 scale (smaller) Carrera GO! Slot car sets as well as Digital 1:43 (more about that later). These sets are often themed and are perfect for youth with an itch to get on the race track. Requiring excellent hand eye coordination but able to take some punishment Carrera sets are our entry level brand perfect for ages 8+.
Scalextric is our premium brand, with cars in the larger 1:32 scale. These sets come with detailed cars that can be tuned to a racers needs with aftermarket gears and motors. The sets present a more “realistic” approach to track layouts without fancy loop de loops or high banking curves. Like their Carrera brothers, they too are offered either Digital or Analog sets.
Analog or Digital? – Choose wisely!
Consider for a moment that a Slot Car set is like a giant circuit and that your controller is a big resistor. The harder you press the trigger the more power flows though the track and the faster your car will move, now if you put two cars in the same “lane” and they will follow each other at the same speed all day long, but add a second lane with a second controller and you have a race! This is how Analog slot cars have worked for 50 years, and will continue to work well into the future, two racers, two cars, two lanes, mano a mano.
But what if you have 3 friends, or maybe even 6 friends who want to race? This is the genius behind digital slot car systems. That resistor we talked about is now a microchip built into each car, and pressing that trigger sends a signal right to your car telling it how fast to go. So how does this help you may ask? In simplest terms it means that you no longer play “follow the leader” if two cars are in the same lane. Now, with each car independently controlled you can have several cars in one lane, and with special “lane changing” track you can pass your opponent with a press of a button.
Carrera Digital 1:43 allow for 3 cars to be controlled this way, but Digital Scalextric allows for so much more. These sets allow for 4 racers and with a digital race management system up to 6 players racing at once. Add pit lane challenges and host of different lane changing pieces and they win the digital race here at Hobby and Toy Central!
